I was born in Watford, Hertfordshire in 1977.
Like many, I can remember drawing pretty much as soon as I could pick up a pencil. Cars and planes moved on to comic books (2000AD a firm favourite!) and film art, then hyper-realistic airbrush works on crash helmets and jackets.
After attending Ridge Street and Callowland art colleges in 1995 I gained my Diploma. Initially, I sold through other galleries for some years, but in 2003 I decided to take charge and started a market stall in St Albans.
The success of the stall was such that it prompted me to consider art as my full time business which is what I had always wanted, so, in 2006, Original Canvases was born.
A working studio and gallery where customers can browse the ever changing stock, or discuss in detail their specific commission requirements. This approach to commissions has served me well and I now have over a thousand works, worldwide: USA, Italy, France, Spain, South Africa, Dubai and even as far away as Australia. And the UK of course.
I also have a lot of regular customers that I am very pleased to call friends.
In 2016 on my 10 year anniversary, I relaunched as Ben Askem – unique works of art, to better reflect the variety of content.
Oh and I happen to be colour-blind: Never let a technicality put you off your chosen path!
